If you take a look at our best mattress guide you’ll find that many of our picks are hybrid mattresses, simply because using a mixture of materials is the best way to deliver that perfect mix of comfort and support; memory foam to cradle and support you, with springs to provide breathability and bit of extra bounce. We’ve spent a lot of time testing the best hybrid mattresses on the market, and we’ve ranked them here for different budgets and sleeping styles. We’ve included a fantastic affordable hybrid mattress that offers big support for a small price, as well as pricier options that offer a more luxurious or specialized sleep experience. We also have great recommendations for anyone shopping for the best hybrid mattress for couples, for back pain, for side sleeping and for cooling. You can buy softer and firm hybrid mattresses, though from our testing experience medium-firm is the sweet spot for most body types and sleeping positions. When choosing a hybrid mattress, also look for a risk-free mattress trial period. The minimum from big bed brands is 100 nights, but DreamCloud, WinkBeds and Saatva each run 365-night trials, so you can try your new bed out in all seasons.  Hybrids are typically more expensive than foam-only mattresses, but most brands in our list offer regular, generous mattress sales, so take it from us: you should never have to pay the full MSRP. Let’s now look at our pick of this year’s best hybrid mattresses for all budgets and sleepers.

The best hybrid mattress 2023 - rated by experts

The Saatva Classic is a luxury, five-layer hybrid innerspring mattress handcrafted in America, and it’s perfect for anyone looking to recreate the feel of a luxury hotel bed in their own bedroom. It’s our favorite mattress overall, and it’s also our best hybrid mattress pick. When we tested Saatva’s flagship mattress for ourselves, we were highly impressed by the luxury finish and build quality. We also found it extremely comfortable to sleep on, with a neutral temperature that meant we didn’t overheat or feel cold. We rank the Saatva Classic as the best hybrid mattress overall because it’s exceptionally well made, a dream to sleep on, and it comes with an impressive number of customization options – you can choose between soft, medium-firm and firm sleep feels, and a depth of either 11.5" or 14.5" – which means it’ll suit a wide range of body types and sleep styles. You’ll find more detail in our Saatva Classic mattress review, but in short we recommend the Luxury Firm to most people, the Plush Soft for side sleepers under 130lb, and the Firm for heavier bodies, back and stomach sleepers. Most of our best hybrid mattress picks include a memory foam layer. That’s absent here – the only foam in the classic comes in the form of rails around the perimeter to bolster edge support. The main body of the mattress is predominantly recycled steel coils, which offer the benefit of excellent breathability, as air can flow through and around the springs. There’s also a plush pillow top to keep things comfy on top, but if you want the body-hugging feel of one of the best memory foam mattresses, check out the DreamCloud at #2 instead. The Saatva Classic has earned the Seal of Approval from the Congress of Chiropractic State Associations thanks to its back pain relief and support (it’s amongst the best mattresses for back pain, by our reckoning). You can thank the additional support added in the lumbar zone for this, as it helps to elevate your hips and maintain healthy spinal alignment.  Even though regular Saatva mattress sales can take up to $250 off the price of this US handcrafted innerspring bed, it’s still on the pricier end, with a queen costing $1,795 at full price. Still, this is more affordable than what you’d pay for a comparable handcrafted hybrid mattress sold in store. You also get some pretty sweet perks for that price, including a full year’s trial period, a lifetime warranty, and free white glove delivery and setup in a room of your choice.  If the Saatva is out of your price range, the DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid mattress in a box is an excellent alternative. After testing it for three weeks, we rate it highly for back and hip support, with consistent pressure relief to reduce pain points in these areas. The DreamCloud achieves this via a mix of memory foam and individually wrapped coils that enable the mattress to contour to your curves.  This subtle yet effective cushioning is bolstered by a 1.5" quilted foam topper and a 1" layer of gel-infused memory foam. This means it works just as well for side sleepers seeking a little sink-in comfort as for back and stomach sleepers who need to remain more on top of the mattress. You may find it too firm if you weigh under 130lb though, so take advantage of the 365-night trial to make sure the medium-firm feel is right for you.  We also rank the DreamCloud as the best hybrid mattress for couples thanks to its higher levels of motion isolation. Hybrids are bouncier than all-foam mattresses so it isn’t uncommon for them to transfer more motion from one side of the bed to the other. However, in our DreamCloud Luxury Hybrid mattress review, our testers didn’t find this to be the case, so we feel confident in recommending this hybrid mattress to anyone who shares a bed with a restless sleeper. An evergreen DreamCloud mattress sale reduces the price of a queen to around $999, making it a more budget-friendly buy than the premium Saatva hybrid above. If you have a tendency to sleep hot, hybrid mattresses are a great choice as the coil layers promote airflow and help to keep temperatures down in the night. And some, like the Brooklyn Bedding Aurora Luxe hybrid mattress, also feature cooling technology for an even more comfortable night. The Aurora features a cooling top weave with a copper-infused foam layer beneath it, both of which work effectively to prevent overheating while you sleep. It’s also a great option if you’re picky about the firmness level of your mattress, as it comes with three firmness options, from soft to firm. Between the Aurora’s three top layers of foam and its high density base foam, there’s a zoned layer of up to 1,032 individually-wrapped Ascension coils delivering support so you don’t sink in too deeply, and helping with airflow too. The end result is a thoroughly comfortable and supportive mattress that should suit most sleeping styles; however it’s not completely perfect. The most noticeable issue we found in our Brooklyn Aurora Luxe mattress review is that when you first unpack it there’s a strong and noxious off-gassing smell that lasts for a few hours; you’ll want to keep a window open while it dissipates. We also found in our testing that the smooth top weave is quite slippery, which means that both you and your fitted sheet may slide around a little on this mattress; this is something that quite a few user reviews have picked up on, too. We are also a little disappointed by its lack of motion isolation, which could make this mattress a hard pass if you share a bed with a restless partner. Despite this, we still rate the Aurora Luxe Hybrid; if you can live with its flaws, you’ll find it supremely comfortable with excellent cooling qualities, and it’s well-made and thoughtfully crafted too. And while it’s not a budget option it’s still affordable, especially when you factor in Brooklyn Bedding’s regular sales of up to 30% off. Following extensive testing, we rate the Helix Midnight as the best mattress for side sleepers, so if you want a hybrid to help you sleep comfortably in this position, look no further. The Midnight has a softer sleep surface, with the extra cushioning and pressure relief along your shoulders, hips and knees that you need to lie comfortably on your side. In our Helix Midnight mattress review we were impressed with the way the mix of contouring memory foam and responsive polyfoam hugs your body, responding to your changing sleep position to deliver good pressure relief all night long. Like the DreamCloud (another good option for side sleepers), the Midnight hybrid mattress was also great at isolating motion, which is good news if you’re sharing a bed with a restless sleeper. You may want to upgrade to the Helix Midnight Plus if you weigh above average though, as you’ll need more support than what’s offered here. Overall the Helix Midnight is well priced for a mid-range hybrid mattress, and it’s regularly up to $150 off in the Helix mattress sale and sold with two free pillows to boost your value for money.  The Casper Wave Hybrid Snow cooling mattress tackles two major sleep disruptors simultaneously: back pain and overheating. It does this via a series of hybrid mattress technologies that you won’t find in any other bed in this guide. But that also means the Casper is the most expensive hybrid mattress featured here. But if you’re dealing with chronic back pain and night sweats or overheating at night, it’s worth trialling to see how it can quickly improve your sleep comfort.  The Casper Wave Hybrid is endorsed by the American Chiropractic Association, and we rate it very highly (it scored 4.5 out of 5 stars in our testing process) for zoned back support. This is powered by Casper’s own Zoned Support Max and gel pod technology designed to lift your lower back during sleep so that it doesn’t bend or dip out of alignment. There are various ergonomic zones for all-over pressure relief too, with 78 of those gel pods delivering noticeable support. In our Casper Wave Hybrid Snow Mattress review, one member of our testing panel who had back pain felt immediate relief when lying on the Wave Hybrid.  If overheating at night is your biggest challenge, then the Casper is the best hybrid mattress for you above all others here. The QuickCool cover is infused with phase change material to absorb then dissipate heat to keep the mattress cooler to the touch. We’ve seen similar technology used in the cheaper Cocoon by Sealy mattress (priced $799 for a queen), but the Casper takes this up a gear with the use of HeatDelete Bands and AirScape 3 technology to quickly disperse body heat so that it doesn’t build up in the bed. A good Casper mattress deal will discount the Wave Hybrid Snow by a few hundred dollars, so they’re worth keeping an eye on. The Purple Hybrid mattress combines individually-wrapped support coils and foam with a 2-inch layer of the brand’s proprietary GelFlex Grid. This culminates in a firmer feel than Purple’s other hybrid mattresses, which feature taller layers of the GelFlex Grid. Thus, if you and/or your sleep partner are on the heavier side, the Purple Hybrid should provide you with the most support out of the brand’s line of beds. You’re also bound to find it suitable for front or back sleeping.  That doesn’t mean you’ll lose out on the boyuant feel for which Purple’s mattresses are best known. And if you’re a combination sleeper, you’ll enjoy how quickly the Purple Hybrid’s blend of gel, foam and springs will contour your body as you shift positions. Meanwhile, if you tend to sleep warm, you’ll benefit from the enhanced airflow courtesy of Purple’s GelFlex Grid and interior coils. It’s wrapped in a breathable soft knit cover, with woven side panels to further boost air circulation.  As of December 2022, the Purple Hybrid has a 4.4 out of 5-star rating from almost 6,000 verified customer reviews. Fans of this mattress say it’s helped reduce their aches and pains thanks to its superb pressure relief and speedy responsiveness. More critical reviews say it’s too firm for their liking; if you prefer a softer bed, opt for either of the Purple Premier Hybrid models.  The Purple Hybrid isn’t the brand’s most expensive offering, nor is it the priciest on this list, but it’s still quite costly. A queen starts at $2,399, and a twin XL goes for $1,899. (There is no standard twin size.) Keep an eye on Purple mattress deals if you want to save some money on this one. If you’re looking for a good cheap mattress to give you a taste of the support and comfort of a hybrid but without breaking the bank, choose the Linenspa 10 Inch Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress. It’s fairly basic in terms of design (especially compared to the mid-range and luxury options in this guide) but offers a decent amount for a very low price.  There are three depths available: 8", 10", and 12" – all with corresponding levels of firmness. In our Linenspa Memory Foam Hybrid Mattress review, we tested the 8" (medium-firm) variation and found it best for lightweight stomach sleepers. However, we feel the 10" (medium) version is the best option for most sleepers shopping for an affordable hybrid mattress, as 10” is the standard height for a bed-in-a-box. If you want something luxuriously plush, choose the 12" profile, especially if you’re a side sleeper.

How to choose the best hybrid mattress for you

When researching the best hybrid mattress for you, we recommend taking the following criteria into account before you spend a dime:

Your budgetThe firmness you like from a mattressYour sleep position (stomach, back, side, combi)Whether you sleep alone or with another personIf you or your partner are a restless sleeperWhether you overheat during sleepAny health considerations that impact sleep quality

Answering those key questions will help you to quickly narrow down the best hybrid mattress for your budget, your body type, sleep needs and any health issues that may be impacting your ability to sleep through the night.  We recommend only buying from a hybrid bed manufacturer or retailer that offers a decent mattress trial of at least 30 nights (100 is the standard). A trial gives your body time to adjust to the hybrid mattress so you can be sure whether it suits you or not. This is very important if you’re switching from an innerspring or memory foam to a hybrid, as the feel is very different and often firmer at first. It’s also worth factoring your frame in when deciding a model – different frames can affect sleep feel more than you’d expect (our best bed base guide offers some recommendations).  We’ve been covering mattresses for years on Tom’s Guide and what we have noticed is that summer isn’t generally a good time to buy a hybrid mattress, as manufacturers tend to increase prices at this time. Couple that with this year’s inflation woes and prices are at a high.  The best time to buy a hybrid mattress is in November when the Black Friday mattress deals arrive. These roll over into Cyber Monday mattress deals, giving you a long weekend of massive discounts and the cheapest hybrid mattress prices we see all year.  If you’re a side sleeper of average weight, a medium-firm hybrid will offer contouring comfort and support. For bodies that weigh over 230lb, consider a firm hybrid mattress to offer the support you need while sleeping in that position for hours at a time. Our highest rated hybrid mattress for sleeping on your side is the Helix Midnight (priced from $699 at Helix Sleep (opens in new tab)). It’s the only hybrid we’ve tested that has been designed specifically for this sleep position, and it’s supremely comfortable to dip your shoulders, hips and knees into.
